Live at The Skylark by Battlestar Kalakala [Vinyl 12" LP]

Battlestar Kalakala is inspired by movements of history from the struggles of the Spanish Civil War in the song Iberia, to the trans-national clashes of culture in the song, Silk Road. Each track has a story and a purpose. From the first rehearsal forward, it was the intention of the band to create original, innovative music while remaining true to our experiences and culture. Afrobeat, funk, soul, and jazz all deeply influence the style of the group, but it is the intention of the band to create original music that has led to the making of this album.

Live at the Skylark is an exploration of texture, groove, and feel. From the opening track onward, the listener sits in the front row or dances beneath twirling lights. The horns are explosive, glued together tightly with driving unison lines and rich harmonies. The rhythm section of drums, percussion, bass, guitar, and keys are the solid core of the sound, providing the structure and framework to forcefully propel the band forward or allow it percolate and simmer. Each track on the record is intended to capture a moment, like a snapshot. This album captures the energy and power that experienced, seasoned musicians are capable of delivering.
