I never saw it clearer. I’ve been on a quest to find this familiar sound for as long as I can remember and watching George play his guitar in the style that was taught to him by Koo Nimo , completely changed my life. From the whirlwind of rhythms to the beautiful arpeggios and counterpuntal melodies, it all opened up like the heavens in the sky, and I could see the sound I have been searching for in its most primitive form. He was playing through different time signatures and various forms of the palmwine traditional “Yaa Amponsah", which always reminds me of Tennessee, much like the drive from Accra to Kumasi. It’s a song derived from the Woods, nature, and a group of people getting together to tell their stories and sing their songs much like folk music as we would call it in the West. Though this sound was so distant, you could still hear where it came from and how it evolved. These distinctive qualities of palm wine, and eventually highlife music is what inspired this album , “Amponsah" Banjo rolls bells and second line horns are just a few elements of the minnie styles that are pulled from to make this record. I want to take the listener on a musical journey that starts in Africa , into the west , and lands closer to New Orleans.
